Gregory Birskovich Obituary

Gregory J. Birskovich, 80, formerly of Vienna, passed away on Wednesday afternoon January 23, 2019 while under the care of Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN.

He was born on August 7, 1938 in Detroit, MI one of the nine children of Steve and Alice (Nestich) Birskovich.  Greg was a graduate of Mathews High School and furthered his education at Youngstown State University where he attained a bachelor’s degree in engineering which initiated a career that grew to span more that forty-five years.  He began working with Commercial Intertech, now known as Parker Hannifin Corporation, traveling to Kings Mountain, Georgia as well as spending several years overseas in Luxembourg assisting in various projects.  Greg’s working carrier concluded with his retirement from Adolf Johnson as a Vice-President.

He was a longtime member of Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Vienna where he had served Mass alongside his pastor and friend Fr. John F. Roach for over twenty years. 

Greg was also a talented gardener who had a special talent for raising dahlias, red were his favorite variety.  He shared his gifts with many novice gardeners who have taken his teachings and bulbs to various flowerbeds all across the United States.  With his wife Mary he enjoyed antiquing and antique cars especially his Ford Model A.  In earlier years he had coached little league in Vienna, enjoyed hunting and was proud of gaining membership in the Buckeye Big Buck Club in 2006.    

Greg was dedicated to his family, was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and will forever be remembered as a kind and gentle man.

He leaves behind his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of fifty-eight years the former Mary E. Hook whom he married on May 28, 1960; his children Chris Hartman and her husband Lamar, Skip Birskovich and his wife Cindy, Lisa “Peach” Sedgwick and her husband Jim, and Kim Gaskins and her husband Ron; six cherished grandchildren Nicholas, Alina, Joey, Kayla, Allison, and Emily; and by his sisters Marion Turner and her husband Bob, Marge Koval, Theresa Scotchie and her husband John, Veronica Finch and her husband Travis, and Bernie Paukovich and her husband Joe..

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Steve, Joe, and Tom.

A Requiem Mass will be held on Monday January 28, 2019 at 11:30AM in the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church 291 Scoville Drive Vienna, Ohio 44473 with Fr. Carlos S. Casavantes F.S.S.P. officiating.  Friends may pay their respects from 9:30 AM until 11:15 AM at the church prior to the Mass.  Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Cortland, Ohio.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Queen of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church 291 Scoville Drive Vienna, Ohio 44473 or to Alive Hospice, Inc. 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, TN 37203.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Dillon & Santucci Funeral Home 4471 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio 44473.
